Rainbow by Michael Channing

Rainbow

by Michael Channing

i live with a black cat named rainbow
when i'm worthy she stands
at arm's length and allows me
to scratch her ears

she owns more ping-pong balls than mr. moose
and curses the couch when it eats them

she likes to watch me shave
as much as i like to watch her sleep
which i understand
shaving and sleeping are mysterious events
she'll sit and watch the wind
till i stop watching her watch the wind

every night
before i go to bed
i hold her nose to nose
you're my baby i tell her
and she makes a sound
that says she knows
the opposite is true
