Thank You

Michael Channing

thank you for hurting me
thank you for opening my skin
thank you for this wound
thank you for hitting me again

without your hand
on the back
of my neck i would have never known
which way was up
without the feel
of your foot
on my spine i would have never known
i was lying down

thank you
thank you
thank you

thank you for owning me
thank you for grinning at my pain
thank you for this scar
i'm happy i could entertain

without you locking me
inside this box
i would have never known
which way was out
without you waking me
at night
i would have never known
i was asleep

thank you
thank you
thank you

thank you for hurting me

Liner Notes

I wrote this song while driving. I was on a two-hour drive home from an open-mic, 2:00 am, exhausted. To keep myself awake I sang into the windshield. The first couple of lines just tumbled out of me. I don't know where the sentiment came from, but it felt powerful. So I kept at it, finding more words. I can still remember the melody to this day, over ten years later.

If this song had music, I feel it should be crunchy, metallic guitar with the vocals soft and gentle in contrast.
