Glitter

Michael Channing

when the sandman shakes his dust
she closes her eyes
opens her thighs
and gives in to her lust
the prince of her dreams
wears a cloak and a crown
painted with glitter
he plucks her strings
draws forth a sound
as he plays her like a fiddler

she wants to know why
there's no one like this
in the waking world
she wants to know why
the colors all fade
when she opens her eyes

when dreamland opens its grin
when the nightingale sings
she slips on her wings
and flutters further in
the world of her dreams
is gold and green
and the clouds rain glitter
dancers drink moonbeams
and tigers jump through rings
and her castle keeps getting bigger

she wants to know why
there's no place like this
in the waking world
she wants to know why
the colors all fade
when she opens her eyes
